Denison falls at Ohio Northern

Box Score

The Denison baseball team dropped its first true road game of the season on Tuesday following a 6-2 setback at Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio.

After a two-out error kept the bottom of the first inning alive, the ONU offense scored its first run of the game when Daniel Rodriguez was struck by an Ian Walsh pitch with the bases loaded.  Denison quickly erased the deficit in the top of the second when an Andrew Touhy double to right scored Ryan Loehnert from second base.

However, the Polar Bears put up three runs in the bottom of the second to regain a 4-1 lead.  A throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt allowed Matt Magni to score from third, while a triple by Nick Eltzroth pushed across Cody Meyer. Eltzroth came around to touch the dish on an infield single by Jack LaMarca.  Ohio Northern added to its lead in the fifth when a sacrifice fly by Clay Small scored Dan Belliveau.

Denison plated a run in the eighth when a fielding miscue in right allowed Georgie Montes to score from second base.  However, a Ben Heskett pinch hit home run in the bottom of the inning put the final exclamation point on the ONU victory.

Montes finished with two hits, a run scored and a stolen base, while Touhy had a double and an RBI.  Charlie Apfelbach, Ryan Mulligan and Duncan Moran logged the other three Denison hits.  Walsh (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits with three walks in 1.1 innings.  Johnny Funkhouser pitched the majority of the game out of the pen.  The freshman scattered four hits and allowed just one unearned run with two Ks in 4.2 innings of work.

Belliveau recorded two hits and scored once for the Polar Bears. Tyler Deitering picked up his second win of the year after surrendering just one run on two hits with seven strikeouts over the course of seven innings.

With the win, the Polar Bears improve to 14-4, while the loss drops the Big Red to 5-8.  Denison resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Springfield for the first of two doubleheaders against Wittenberg.  Game one of the four-game series is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
