DU blanks Bishops in NCAC opener

The 29th-ranked Denison men's tennis team kicked off its North Coast Athletic Conference slate with a dominating 9-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville.

After going 8-2 at second doubles, the doubles team of Casey Cempre and Andrew Marczak picked up their first win of the year at the top flight following an 8-4 decision over Aadil Kohari and Richie Karban. Cempre and Marczak are now 15-4 overall, including a 9-2 mark in dual matches.

The lineup shift continued as the duo of Jeffrey LoDuca and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean, usually slotted at third doubles, successfully made their debut at the second flight.  The tandem posted a convincing 8-1 win over Conor Breen and Dane Poppe. The freshman pairing of Ryan Bibo and Steve Smykal completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory over John Russell and Austin Okray at No. 3 doubles.

The Big Red captured all six singles flights, which included five straight-set victories.  Senior Juan Guerra was the lone DU player that needed three sets to defeat his opponent, Kohari.  After dropping the first set 6-3, Guerra rebounded with a 6-3 win in the second set.  The Denison senior completed the comeback with an 11-9 win in the decisive set.

Marczak picked up his 14th singles win this season after defeating Karban 6-1, 7-5. O'Gorman-Bean also notched his 14th win this year and his seventh-straight following a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Okray at the fifth flight.  Cempre, Veltman and freshman Owen Smith all notched matching 6-1, 6-0 victories at third, fourth and sixth singles, respectively.

With the win, the Big Red improves to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC West Division, while OWU falls to 5-10 and 0-3 in conference play.  Denison returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Richmond, Ind. to take on Earlham at 1 p.m.
