Box Score A pair of home runs by Kyle McHugh lifted fifth-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point to a 5-1 victory over Denison on Thursday at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Fla.
The Pointers took the early lead thanks to a Bobby Gregorich infield single that scored Taylor Carlson in the bottom of the second. In the next half inning, the Big Red offense answered with a run of their own. After a leadoff double by sophomore Brandon Morgan, Lascelles Lagares sacrificed the base runner over to third. Freshman Conner Madey followed with a base hit that scored Morgan and tied the game at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the fifth frame when McHugh launched a one-out, three-run homer to left field. McHugh added to the lead two innings later with a solo home run that put UW-Stevens Point in front 5-1.
Madey, Morgan, Lagares and Ryan Mulligan accounted for DU's four hits. Johnny Funkhouser suffered the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work. Connor Hanrahan tossed a hitless eighth out of the pen.
McHugh finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Gregorich and Harry Steldt also recorded two hits. Zach Wendrof picked up the victory after allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. Brad Stroik surrendered one hit and struck out five batters in the final two innings.
Denison falls to 2-6, while the Pointers improve to 8-1. The Big Red returns to the diamond on Friday when they take on Keene State at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
