Box Score Trinity (Conn.) scored eight runs in the first three innings. That head-start would be enough to push the Bantams past the Denison Big Red, 13-5 to open DU's spring break schedule in Auburndale, Fla.
Trinity's four-run first inning was powered by a three-run triple to right field by Daniel Pidgeon. He would lead Trinity at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double, triple, and six RBIs.
Denison's offense would come in the top of the fifth when Charlie Apfelbach led off the inning with a double to centerfield. Ryan Mulligan followed with a single, and a sacrifice fly by Zac Lewinski would plate Apfelbach with DU's first run. Nick Marsit would single to left, moving Mulligan into scoring position and Brandon Morgan followed with an infield single that would load the bases for Eric Zmuda. His liner to left field scored Mulligan and kept the bases loaded.
That would set the stage for a two-run throwing error on the Trinity catcher, who was trying to pick off Marsit at third base after a DU strikeout. That throwing error would allow Marsit and Morgan to score. Alex Enrique would tack on an RBI single, scoring Zmuda with DU's fifth run of the inning. After a walk to Andrew Touhy, Apfelbach would end the inning with a line drive to center.
Now trailing 8-5 heading into the sixth, Trinity would two runs in the inning, followed by three more in the seventh to lock up the 13-5 win.
Six pitchers saw action for Denison as Charlie Binford, Ian Barry, and Connor Hanrahan all worked scoreless innings. Connor Murphy took the loss as he allowed four runs, three of which were earned, in the first inning off two hits and one walk.
Denison will look to rebound on Sunday versus Eastern Connecticut State at 3 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
