No. 30 Chicago slips past Denison

The 30th-ranked Chicago Maroons won two of three doubles flights en route to a 5-4 victory over Denison on Saturday night at the Jasper Tennis Center on the campus of Kenyon College.

The two squads each captured three singles flights, with the Big Red winning at first, fifth and sixth singles.  Senior Juan Guerra picked up the biggest win for DU as he knocked off 10th-ranked Deepak Sabada in three sets.  Guerra won the opening set 6-4, but dropped a 7-5 decision in the next. In the third-and-final set, the Denison senior doubled up Sabada, 6-3, to his first dual win of the season.

Junior Graham Gettel and sophomore Jackson O'Gorman-Bean won straight-set decisions at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.  Gettel knocked off Gordon Zhang with matching 6-4 scores, while O'Gorman-Bean took down Zsolt Szabo (6-2, 6-3).

Chicago grabbed, what proved to be, a very important lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. The Big Red's lone win came at the second flight where senior Andrew Marczak and junior Casey Cempre posted an 8-4 win over Max Hawkins and Szabo.

Denison falls to 0-1, while the Maroons improve to 1-0 this season. The Big Red returns to action next Saturday when they take on Allegheny College at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pa.  Match time is slated for 3 p.m.
