Late surge sinks Denison

Box Score

A late second-half run helped Hiram College foil Denison's bid for its first three-game winning streak of the season.  A 14-3 run down the stretch coupled with offensive struggles by the Big Red helped Hiram secure a 68-53 victory on Wednesday night in Granville.

Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm in the opening period as they went a combined 18-for-53 (33.9 percent) and turned the ball over 18 times.  Hiram led by as many as nine twice inside the final six minutes before taking a 25-18 lead into the intermission.

Denison came out of the locker room with some fire as sophomore Darius White drained a triple on the first possession of the half.  After Aaron Stefanov was whistled for an offensive foul, David Meurer found Briggs King for an easy bucket in the paint to make it a two-point contest.  Trailing by three on their next trip down the court, a driving Brad Woolard kicked out to a wide open White who buried another 3-pointer to tie the game at 26-26 with just over 18 minutes to play.

DU slowly built a six-point lead at the midway point of the half, but a 9-2 Terrier burst but the visiting team back on top 45-44.  The Big Red regained a one-point lead when Alex Longi knocked down a pair at the charity stripe. However, that lead was short lived as Hiram went on a 14-3 spurt to take a 59-49 lead with 3:11 on the clock.  The Terriers maintained a three-position advantage for the final 3+ minutes, eventually walking off the court with a 15-point win.

Hiram held a 39-25 advantage on the glass, including a 12-4 edge in offensive boards.  Those 12 extra opportunities resulted in 12 points, while DU netted just two tallies with their four bonus chances. As a team, the Terriers shot 40.7 percent from the floor (22-for-54), while the Big Red converted at a 37.8 percent clip (17-for-45).

Longi paced Denison with 13 points to go along with two steals in 36 minutes.  Meurer and White each chipped in 10 points in 26 and 28 minutes, respectively.  Meurer also dished out a team-best four assists.

Josh Edmonson recorded a double-double for the Terriers with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Chris Zurowski added 18 tallies.  Kyle Deckerd and Riley Moore also had 10 points apiece.

Denison falls to 12-12 overall and 8-9 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Hiram moves to 6-18 and 4-13 in league play.  The Big Red wraps up the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Meadville, Pa. for a 3 p.m. game against Allegheny.
