No. 30 Denison rolls past Gators

The 30th-ranked Denison women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Allegheny College on Saturday at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pa.

The Big Red opened up the match with a clean sweep in double competition.  The regionally-ranked team of Kelsey Geppner and Taylor Hawkins improved to 5-3 following a dominating 8-1 win over Sun Mo Koo and Laura Steele at No. 1 doubles.  At the second flight, the freshmen tandem of Emily Holloway and Lauren Schechtman defeated Mikaela Pope and Andrea Brush, 8-5.

In the final doubles match, sophomores Sarah Torrence and Frances Hinkamp were pushed to the limit by Michaela Thompson and Kathleen McBride.  After splitting the first 16 points of the flight, the two teams went to a tiebreaker to decide the point.  Torrence and Hinkamp secured the sweep with a 7-3 nod in the tiebreaker.

In singles action, Denison won five of the six flights in straight sets. Holloway knocked off Koo via matching 6-2 scores at No. 1 singles, while Eleni Coleman cruised past Pope (6-0, 6-2).  Hinkamp, Torrence and senior Heather Abzug also picked up straight-set wins at flights four, five and six, respectively.  After dropping the first set at second singles, Schechtman won the next two via 6-2, 6-3 scores.

Denison improves to 1-1 on the year, while the Gators fall to 4-2 this season.  The Big Red returns to the court on Saturday, March 1 when they take on Indian University of Pennsylvania at the Alpha Tennis & Fitness Club in Pittsburgh, Pa.  Match time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
