Box Score Briggs King scored 19 points while Brad Woolard and Darius White each added 12 as Denison held on for a 70-63 win over Earlham College on Tuesday night in Richmond, Ind.
Denison led by as many as 19 in the second half and appeared to be cruising to their eighth win of the season after connecting on 8-of-10 from 3-point range in the first half. That 19-point lead would be slowly chipped away by the Quakers. With 10:10 remaining, Earlham's Taylen Alexander drilled a 3-pointer trimming DU's lead to single digits for the first time since the 12 minute mark of the first half.
With 6:47 to play, White canned a triple to put the Big Red up 10, but that would trigger a 7-0 run by the Quakers over the next four minutes of play.
Now leading by just three, King scored down low off a feed from Woolard but Earlham would score the next four point to get back to within two with just under three minutes to play. After a timeout, Denison went back the hot hand in King who converted after a nice pass from Matthew Bauer.
Earlham would answer when Joe Adams with a put-back after an offensive rebound. With the score 62-60 in favor of Denison, Bauer would provide the shot of the night when he buried a 3-pointer from the elbow with 1:26 remaining. Earlham would follow with a turnover as they tried to move the ball across midcourt and White would connect on a pair of free throws with 46 seconds left to secure the victory.
The Big Red shot 51 percent for the game (26-of-51) and were 11-for-17 from beyond the arc. King finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Woolard tallied 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. White was 3-of-6 from 3-point territory and finished with 12 points. Bauer scored nine points while Max Siwik contributed a career-high eight points off the bench in only seven minutes of action.
Earlham (0-10) got 17 points from Alexander and 11 points from Kyle Smith, Patrick Hawkins and Smith. They shot 43 percent from the field and were 7-of-19 (.368) from long range.
Denison improves to 8-3 overall and will enter 2015 primed for a critical North Coast Athletic Conference meeting with No. 14 Wooster on Saturday (Jan. 3) in Granville. Tip-off against the Fighting Scots is scheduled for 3 p.m.
