Cold shooting results in loss to Witt

Box Score

Wittenberg battled back from a 12-point first half deficit, holding Denison to just one 3-point field goal over the final 20 minutes.  The result was a 59-57 victory for the host Tigers.  Denison drops to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with the loss.

Wittenberg's zone was baiting the Big Red to shoot from beyond the arc.  In Wednesday night's 34-point win over Oberlin, Denison knocked down 13 triples and shot 57 percent from downtown.  This afternoon, the shots were not falling and the Tigers managed to piece together a comeback through all of the misfires.

With a minute and a half to play, Denison's Bret Woolard scored inside off a rebound of his own miss, cutting the Tiger lead to 59-57.  DU would get a stop but David Meurer's shot to put the Big Red up one was off the mark.  Wittenberg's Cody Phillippi secured the rebound but turned it over with a pass down court.

With 16 seconds left, DU called a time out and ran a play for Darius White, Denison's hottest shooter over the last week.  White's 3-pointer from the wing came up dry and Tiger Shane Edwards came down with the contested rebound with three seconds left.

Edwards went to the line and missed the pair, but all DU could manage off the second miss was a desperation 3-point try from just beyond half court as time expired.

Denison was 7-of-17 from deep in the first half, but were a frigid 1-of-16 in the second half.  An even more telling stat came at the free throw line where Denison went just 1-of-2 for the entire game.

White and Bret Woolard both finished with 15 points to lead Denison.  Woolard added nine rebounds and was 7-for-15 from the field.  White shot 5-of-12 and was 5-of-11 from 3-point territory.  Briggs King turned in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes.

Edwards led Wittenberg with 13 points and 11 boards.  Chad Roy chipped in 12 points while going 5-for-5.

The Tigers edged Denison on the boards, 40-35 and shot 44 percent to DU's 36 percent.

Denison will take a two week break from games for final exams and Christmas.  They will return to action on Dec. 29 when they take on Berry College in Lexington, Ky. on the campus of Transylvania University.
