Box Score Second-seeded Allegheny scored four times in the second half en route to a 4-1 victory over Denison in Wednesday's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal match in Meadville, Pa.
After a lengthy feeling out process by both teams, action finally started picking up midway through the opening half. In the 26th minute, the Gators earned a corner kick just 30 seconds after Jessie Thiessen hit the post with her second shot of the half.
The Big Red successfully defended the corner attempt and turned it into a counter attack that saw sophomore captain Anne Denz generate a breakaway opportunity. Denz made a run down the left sideline and took a pass from Andrea Witte and ripped a shot past Gabby Curtis from five yards out to put Denison on top 1-0 at the 26:22 mark. Just 64 seconds of game time elapsed between Thiessen hitting the post and Denz netting her sixth goal of the season.
After nearly tying the match in the first couple minutes of the second half, Allegheny's Hannah Zangara knocked in a high-arcing ball from Greta Hilbrands in the 49th minute to square the match at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the 62nd minute when Zangara scored for the second time off an assist from Thiessen. Faith Robinson and Thiessen added goals in the 66th and 75th minutes, respectively, to secure the Gator win.
Denz led the DU offense with five of the team's 18 shots, while Logan Berlet, Witte, Drew Wentzel, Meg Wozniak and Allison Vilsack registered two attempts each. Freshman keeper Jenny Herold finished the day with two saves in 90 minutes.
As a team, the Big Red outshot Allegheny 18-16, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Denison also won the corner battle 7-6 and committed just four of the match's nine fouls.
Zangara finished with two goals and an assist, while Thiessen had one goal and one assist. The duo also combined for 10 of the team's 16 shot attempts. Curtis made six stop for the Gators in goal.
Denison wraps up the 2014 season with a 13-6 record, while Allegheny (15-5) advanced to play Kenyon in the 2014 NCAC Tournament Championship match in Gambier, Ohio.
