Big Red drops tourney opener to Bethany

Box Score

Denison suffered its first setback of the 2014-15 season on Saturday, 61-56, at the hands of Bethany College in Chicago, Ill.

Trailing by three with under one minute to play, senior Briggs King blocked Delonte Joyce's shot and Bret Woolard was there for the rebound.  At the other end, Denison's Darius White had consecutive 3-point attempts that looked good, only to pop out of the rim at the last second.  The final try with 15 seconds left resulted in a defensive rebound for Bethany's Alan Harper.

Forced to foul, Bethany would hit four free throws over the final 11 seconds to secure the 5-point victory.

Three players scored in double figures for Denison, led by Brad Woolard's 11 points and 12 rebounds.  King finished with 10 points and five boards while David Meurer chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists.  Leading scorer, Bret Woolard, was saddled with foul trouble for much of the game and finished with four points in 15 minutes of action.

Joyce paced Bethany (4-1) with a game-high 21 points while going 5-of-17 from the field and 9-for-11 from the free throw line.  Denison outrebounded the Bison 47-30 but turnovers proved costly as Denison committed 17 that resulted in 22 points for Bethany.

Denison (3-1) will return on Sunday to face the loser of today's Beloit vs. Chicago game at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
