Box Score Two goals by Ashlyn Flaherty and Anne Denz helped send Denison to a dominating 5-0 victory over Oberlin on Tuesday night in Granville, Ohio. With the win, the Big Red improved to 5-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
Nearly 19 minutes and seven shots into the match, DU put its first goal on the board. On a delayed foul call, junior captain Andrea Witte tracked down the ball and kept it from going over the end line. The reigning NCAC Player of the Week worked her way back into the box and ripped a shot into the lower left corner for her sixth goal of the season.
Just 92 seconds later, Flaherty double Denison's lead over the Yeowomen. Freshman midfielder Meg Wozniak set up the sophomore's goal with a pass into the box from the end line. Flaherty settled the ball and floated a shot over keeper Kate Frost from roughly 10 yards out. Denz added a third goal in the 43rd minute. The sophomore captain settled a loose ball and made a run down the left side of the box. After entering the box, Denz blasted a shot that found its way into the far corner of the goal which gave DU a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
Flaherty and Denz tacked on another goal each in the early stages of the second half. Flaherty's seventh goal of the season came in the 47th minute, while Denz's fourth tally on the year crossed the line at 49:54.
The Big Red went on to outshoot Oberlin 40-4 on the night. Witte and Denz each registered eight shots, while Wozniak finished with seven attempts. Flaherty's two scores came off four shots, while sophomore midfielder Jessica Skelly logged five attempts. Freshman goalie Jenny Herold made one stop en route to her seventh shutout of the season.
Hannah Cook paced the Yeowomen offense with two shots, while Frost suffered the loss after allowing five goals and making eight stops in 53 minutes. Emilia Omerberg played the final 37 minutes and made four saves.
Denison (12-5) wraps up the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Greencastle, Ind. for a 12 p.m. match with DePauw University.
