Big Red knocks off Maroons

The Denison women's swimming & diving team opened its dual meet schedule on Saturday with a 182-109 victory over the University of Chicago at the Trumbull Aquatics Center in Granville, Ohio.

The Big Red won 11 of the 16 events en route to the home-opening victory. Junior Marissa Bednarek led the way with three wins on Saturday. Bednarek swam the second leg on the victorious 200 medley relay. The foursome of Carolyn Kane, Bednarek, Ashley Yearwood and Rima Jurjus combined for a time of 1:47.98.

The junior also swept the 100 and 200 backstroke events with times of 1:06.79 and 2:24.82, respectively. Kane and Jurjus also picked up individual wins in addition to the relay victory. Kane touched in at 53.23 in the 100 free, while Jurjus finished the 50 freestyle in 24.59.

Other multiple winners for the Big Red included sophomores Campbell Costley and Sarah Lopez. Costley swept the distance freestyle events, winning the 1,000 in 10:24.95 and the 500 free in 5:05.20. Lopez placed first on both diving boards. The sophomore totaled 209.70 points in the 1-meter and followed that up with a score 186.75 in the 3-meter event.

Denison other two victories on Saturday came from senior Molly Willingham and freshman Halli Garza. Willingham was victorious in the 200 free after clocking in at 1:57.56, while Garza's time of 2:09.29 earned her a win in the 200 fly.

DU returns to action next weekend when they travel to The Ohio State University to take on the Buckeyes and Princeton University in a tri-match. The two-day event begins on Friday at 5 p.m.
