Box Score Kenyon's Becca Romaine broke a scoreless tie in the 66th minute to lift the Ladies to a 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Denison on a rainy Tuesday night in Granville, Ohio.
The slick turf at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium took some time to get use to as neither team registered a shot attempt in the opening seven-plus minutes of the match. Kenyon nearly struck early when Maggie Smith found herself one-on-one with Big Red goalie Jenny Herold. Smith got a shot off, but a keeper's best friend, the left post, kept its scoreless affair.
Denison answered in the 11th minute when junior captain Andrea Witte weaved her way through the Kenyon defense. Witte worked her way inside the box and ripped a shot from 13 yards out that was deflected away by KC goalie Alissa Poolpol. The Big Red outshot the Ladies 7-3 in the opening half, but the game remained 0-0 at the intermission.
Witte had another quality opportunity early in the second half after finding her way through the Kenyon defense once again. This time, the junior unloaded a shot from 15 yards out that was corralled by Poolpol.
After nearly volleying for a goal off a corner kick, the Ladies final broke the tie at 65:46. After receiving a pass from Anna Walley, Romaine dribbled into open space and released a shot from 25 yards out that found its way into the lower left corner.
Looking to counter quickly, sophomore captain Anne Denz sent a beautiful cross that found a streaking Jacquie Graham. Graham was able to put a head on the ball right at the goal line, but the sophomore's momentum sent the ball over the crossbar. In the 77th minute, sophomore Meg Sutter looked to capitalize on a Denz cross. However, Sutter's one-timer went right into the charging keeper.
Denison finished with a 12-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-4 edge in shots on net. The Big Red committed two more fouls than the Ladies (8-6), and earned one more corner kick (2-1) and had one more offsides (2-1).
Witte, Denz, Meg Wozniak and Ashlyn Flaherty all had two shots, while Herold finished the night with three saves. Smith logged a game-high three attempts to pace the KC attack, while the lone goal scorer Romaine had two shots. Poolpol made six stops in 90 minutes between the pipes.
DU falls to 8-5 and 2-1 in the NCAC, while Kenyon improves to 7-6-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league action. Denison returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 18) when they travel to Wooster for a 1 p.m. match.
