Big Red splits outdoor meet at MSU

Denison's women's swimmers kicked off the 2014-15 season with a rare outdoor, 50-meter long course tri-meet against NCAA Division I opponent, Michigan State and NCAA Division II member, Grand Valley State.  The Big Red defeated Grand Valley, 119-86 but suffered a 137-68 loss to the Spartans.

The Big Red was paced by sophomore Campbell Costley who won a team-best three events.  Costley started off the day with a victory in the 800 meter long course freestyle in 9:25.49.  She would return to win the 400 meter long course freestyle, touching in 4:35.81.

DU would close the meet with a win in the 400 meter long course freestyle relay as Costley, Rima Jurjus, Ashley Yearwood and Molly Willingham combined for a time of 4:08.48.

Denison's other victory would come from another sophomore, Carolyn Kane, who touched first in the 100 meter long course freestyle in 1:01.30.  Yearwood took third in the event with a time of 1:01.97.

Earlier in the meet, Kane posted a runner-up finish in the 50 meter freestyle with her time of 28.12 seconds.  Denison's top finishers were rounded out by Marissa Bednarek who took third in the 200 meter freestyle in 2:54.18.

The Big Red swimmers return to action next weekend when they travel to Kenyon College for the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Relays.  Denison's divers, who did not compete in East Lansing, will remain in Granville where they will host the NCAC Diving Relays.
