Box Score Two goals in each half propelled the Denison women's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Wittenberg on Saturday night at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.
The Tigers took the early lead at 23 minutes even when Erika Rich sent Wittenberg's fifth shot of the match into the lower left corner from just inside the 18-yard box. Rich's third goal of the season was set up by a through ball from Lauren Hofer.
However, the Witt lead was short lived as Denison quickly answered in the 26th minute of play. Freshman defender Drew Wentzel sent a long pass from DU's defensive side of the field that found a streaking Anne Denz down the left sideline. Denz dribbled the ball into the box and ripped a shot into the lower left 90 to tie the contest at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the 40th minute when the Big Red capitalized on their second corner kick of the match. Junior Andrea Witte set the corner towards the far post that found Jessica Skelly who headed the ball just inside the right post. The goal was Skelly's third of the year, while Witte collected her sixth assist on the season.
Denison built on its lead early in the second half when a deflected cross attempt found freshman Meg Wozniak near the top of the box. Wozniak settled the ball and rifled a shot into the lower left 90 for her fourth goal of the season. DU's third goal of the contest came at 53:25.
The Big Red nailed down the win in the 83rd minute when Witte and Skelly teamed up for another score. Witte one-touched a pass to Skelly who chipped a shot from well outside the 18-yard box over goalie Maggie Grieser's head and into the upper right 90 for her fourth tally of the season. With the goal, Witte picked up her North Coast Athletic Conference-leading seventh save of the season.
Wittenberg's Kyrie Bumpus scored off a free kick in the 89th minute, but the deficit was too much to overcome for the Tigers.
Denison dominated the shot category 31-8, and earned four corners compare to just one for Witt. The Big Red also committed 10 fouls, while the Tigers had seven infractions whistled against them.
Denz and sophomore Ashlyn Flaherty each took a match-high five shots, while Skelly and Witte recorded four shots. Saturday marked Skelly's second multiple-goal performance this season, while Witte recorded multi-assists in a game for the fourth time in her career. Freshman goalie Jenny Herold played all 90 minute between the pipes, making one save on the night.
Weston led Wittenberg in shots with three to go along with one assist, while late goal scorer Bumpus posted two attempts. Alexa Murrietta suffered the loss after surrendering three goals and posting five saves in 56+ minutes. Grieser stopped four shots and allowed one goal in the final 33:43 of the match.
With the win, Denison moves to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC, while the Tigers fall to 5-5-1 and 1-2 in the conference. The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday when they host Kenyon at 7 p.m.
