Bobcats hold off Big Red

In what was the Big Red's third dual meet in two days, Division I Ohio University managed to hold on for a 157-143 victory over Denison from the Trumbull Aquatics Center.

DU posted seven event victories and six NCAA 'B' cut times were logged, however none of the 'B' cuts were season-best times.  Leading the way for Denison was freshman Carolyn Kane who won three events and finished second in another.  In the 50 freestyle, Kane posted a time of 23.65 for the win.  She also touched first in the 100 freestyle thanks to her time of 52.22 seconds.  In the final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, Kane, Ashley Yearwood, Tully Bradford, and Molly Willingham finished in front of Denison's other relay squad made up of Kate Wright, Mary Van Leuven, Natalie Lugg, and Rima Jurjus.  The relay team of Kane, Yearwood, Bradford, and Willingham won with a time of 3:29.72, while the second-place relay touched in 3:35.13.

Another multiple winner for DU was Campbell Costley who won the 500 freestyle in 5:02.52.  In the 200 freestyle she led a trio of Denison swimmers that went 1-2-3 in the standings.  Costley's winning time was 1:53.39 while Bradford and Van Leuven followed with times of 1:54.30, and 1:56.09, respectively.

Sophomore Michelle Howell took first-place in the 200 fly with a time of 2:09.08 and she returned for a runner-up finish in the 400 individual medley after her time of 4:34.22.  In the 200 fly, Krysta Garbarino placed third (2:12.19) and in the 400 IM, Taylor Johns placed fourth (4:37.96) and Libby Dalziel finished fifth (4:43.00).

The 200 breaststroke event saw Marissa Bednarek get a victory after touching in 2:25.54.  Second-place went to Lugg with a time of 2:26.16.  She would also post a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.22 while Bednarek touched third in 1:07.28.

In the 1,650 freestyle, Johns touched second in 17:14.52 while Madison Taylor finished third in 18:10.88.  A third-place finish would also go to Yearwood in the 100 backstroke after her time of 59.22.

In the first event of the meet, the 200 medley relay, Denison's foursome of Kane, Willingham, Lugg and Yearwood placed second in 1:47.32.

In the 3-meter dive, Carrie Bookheimer led the way with a score of 182.48 that landed her in fifth place.  Morgan Christman followed in sixth-place with a score of 160.50.

The 1-meter board saw four DU divers occupy spots 5-8 in the standings.  Sarah Lopez posted the top score at 219.90, while Chirstman followed with 182.85.  Bookheimer took seventh with a score of 171.53 while Katherine Hennigan placed eighth with 145.80.

Denison will return to action next Saturday (Jan. 18) when they send a split-squad to The University of Pittsburgh, while the other half remains in Granville to host Grove City College at 1 p.m.
