Box Score A goal in the 16th minute by sophomore Logan Berlet was all the Denison women's soccer team needed on Saturday as they edged Wilmington, 1-0, at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
It only took the Big Red two attempts to get a shot past Quaker keeper Grace Hignite. Just minutes after Wilmington's Brooke Lamb hit the crossbar, Berlet shook her defender and bent a shot into the upper right 90 from roughly 30 yards out. That goal was the first of Berlet's collegiate career.
DU had a chance to double its lead with 13 minutes to play in the opening period when freshman Meg Sutter tried to thread a pass to Caitlin Cheverine. However, Hignite made a sliding play to break up the scoring opportunity.
In the second period, Denison continued to generate quality chances on the offensive end of the field. In the 56th minute, senior captain Jocelyn Festle sent a cross-goal pass from the right side that just missed Sutter. Three minutes later, Berlet ripped a shot that was knocked aside by the Wilmington keeper.
The Big Red also had back-to-back opportunities halted by offside calls. Sophomore Grace Danis sent a shot on goal that was waved off in the 76th minute. Almost two and a half minutes later, DU had a goal taken off the board on another offside call. Festle sent a beautiful cross to the left side of the goal that found Maddy Regan on the doorstep. Regan buried the shot to spark another DU celebration. However, after a conversation with the linesman, the referee waved the goal off.
Denison's final chance came with roughly five minutes to play when senior captain Libbie Randolph found freshman Naomi Barker in the middle of the field. Barker settled the ball and touched it past Hignite. However, the goalie recovered to smoother the ball deep in the box.
The Big Red outshot the Quakers 14-10, and attempted nine corners compared to five by the visitors. Festle logged a game-high four shots, while Berlet had three attempts, including the game's only goal. Senior goalie Andrea Karl made two saves while Hignite finished with three stops.
Denison improves to 1-1 on the year, while Wilmington falls to 1-1. The Big Red closes out its three-match homestand on Friday when they host Shenandoah University at 7 p.m.
