Bishops take two from Big Red

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Big Red entered the day riding a seven-game winning streak but the Battling Bishops put together a three-run first inning and a back-breaking eight-run fourth en route to an 11-0 series opening win.  In game two, OWU held off the Big Red for a 5-2 victory setting up a Sunday showdown in Delaware with Denison hoping to force a series split.

In game two, Denison took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after a two-run single by Ryan Loehnert that scored Danny Kraus and Kyle Clemmenson.  Kraus led off the game with a double to right field and after a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Touhy, Clemmenson walked setting the table for Loehnert.

In the bottom of the second, Ohio Wesleyan would take advantage of two Big Red errors, plating three runs to take a 3-2 lead.  The Battling Bishops would add a fourth run in the bottom of the fifth off a J.J. Buckey solo home run and a third insurance run in the eighth on a Ben Steele RBI ground out.

OWU scored five runs off three hits in the nightcap and three of the five runs earned.  Kyle Colgain was the starter for DU and he took the loss, going 7.1 innings while allowing three hits and two walks while fanning three.  Philip Seay pitched the final two-thirds for the Big Red and struck out one.

Charles Cooper got the win for Ohio Wesleyan and improved to 3-0 on the season.  He also allowed three hits in 7.0 innings pitched.  Both Denison runs were earned.  Cooper struck out six and walked three.  Buckey would enter the game in the ninth and get strike out the side to record his second save of the season.

In the opener, Brandon Sega got the start for OWU and went six innings, scattering three hits while striking out five.  Denison starter Tim Duxbury dropped to 3-2 on the season after pitching 3.1 innings.  Duxbury allowed 12 hits and eight earned runs while striking out three.

Denison totaled four hits in the game while the Battling Bishops racked up 17.  DU relievers Georgie Montes, Sam Belisle and Matthew Agvent pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing one run off five hits.  Jake Meegan led Denison at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Ohio Wesleyan did all of its damage offensively without an extra-base hit in game one.

The Big Red drops to 13-10 overall and 6-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division.  Ohio Wesleyan improves to 11-8 and 3-3 in the NCAC West.  The two teams will square off on Sunday (April 14) in a doubleheader that will begin at Littick Field in Delaware, Ohio.
