Box Score Baldwin Wallace erased a pair of three-run Denison leads, and a pivotal sixth inning by the Yellow Jackets would be enough to top the Big Red, 9-6, from Port Charlotte, Fla.
Denison came out of the gates strong, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to three errors in the inning by BW. First baseman Ryan Mulligan's base hit scored Danny Kraus. That came after Andrew Touhy scored on a throwing error by BW starting pitcher, Brian Taricska.
In the third, DU's Kyle Clemmenson doubled home Kraus, giving Denison a 3-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets would get on the board in the home half of the inning with two unearned runs via a pair of Big Red fielding errors.
The score would stay that way until the fifth inning, when Clemmenson's second hit of the game plated Krause. After a walk to Nick Marsit, Lowell Hall's single scored Clemmenson, putting Denison on top, 5-2.
The pesky Yellow Jackets came back with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and in the sixth inning BW turned the tide. Denison starter Tim Duxbury was strong over the first five innings, scattering just five hits. In the sixth, Duxbury walked two and allowed a lead-off hit and left the game with the bases loaded and one out.
Ryan Loehnert replaced Duxbury and quickly forced a ground out that scored the first run of the inning. Two walks and two wild pitches later, BW found themselves out in front, 7-5 heading to the seventh inning.
In the top of the eighth, Denison's Jake Meegan reached first base after being hit by a pitch with two outs. He would advance to second on a throwing error by pitcher, Brandon Cichocki and Charlie Apfelbach's RBI single would cut the deficit to one.
The bottom of the eighth would see BW add a pair of insurance runs off RBI singles by Brad Gugliot and Eric Murphy. In the ninth, Kraus led off the inning with a single but Cichocki would fan three straight to lock up his first save of the season.
The loss was pinned on Duxbury who went 5.1 innings allowing five earned runs off six hits while striking out four. Will Pantages got the win after his 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Kraus led DU at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Clemmenson was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
With the loss, Denison drops to 0-4. On Thursday the Big Red will take on top-ranked Wheaton (Mass.) at 11 a.m. Baldwin Wallace improves to 7-2 on the season.
