Rain delay helps Heidelberg rally past DU

Box Score

Following a lengthy rain delay, Heidelberg rallied from a one-run deficit to knock off Denison, 5-1, on Tuesday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Big Red took their first lead of the 2013 campaign in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a trio of fielding miscues by the Heidelberg defense.  With two down, senior Danny Kraus reached by way of an error on the shortstop.  The next batter, Ryan Mulligan, also reached safely thanks to an error on the Berg second baseman.  After both runners moved up on a passed ball, Kraus scored when senior Kyle Clemmenson got on base via third baseman error.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of Denison through the first three innings.  At the end of the third, the clouds opened up and the rain came down, forcing an hour and a half stoppage.  When play resumed it appeared that DU held on to the momentum built in the first three frames.  After Eric Monroe got on via error to open the fourth, Big Red starter Connor Murphy induced a 3-6-3 double play to clear the bases.  The junior hurler followed that up with a strikeout to retire the side.

Heidelberg tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Joe Staab that scored George Marsico.  In the sixth, a pair of singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs.  The Berg took the lead when Steve Morse singled in T.J. Harkness.  That base hit forced DU Head Coach Mike Deegan to make a call to the bullpen.

After walking the first batter he faced, reliever Philip Seay got Arneal Squibb to line into an unassisted double play at first.  The Berg added one more run via pass ball to take a 4-1 before Seay recorded the final out of the inning.  Heidelberg tacked on one more insurance run in the ninth on a Derek Hug pinch-hit single.

Senior Tim Duxbury and junior Andrew Touhy each recorded a hit for the Big Red, while Kraus scored Denison's lone run.  Murphy suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work.  Seay gave up one run on two hits with two Ks over the final four frames.

Staab and Alex Grove each logged a pair of hits to pace the Berg offense.  Reliever Adam Manner earned the win after tossing five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.

Denison (0-3) returns to the field on Wednesday against Baldwin Wallace University at 10:30 a.m.
