No. 3 Marietta tops Big Red

Box Score

No. 3 Marietta pounded out 14 hits and scored at least once in the first six innings.  The result was a 14-2 loss by the Big Red to the defending national champions in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Denison (0-2) fell behind 2-0 after the first inning and a half.  In the bottom of the second, DU got on the scoreboard when Brandon Morgan's ground out scored to third base, scoring Georgie Montes.

Denison sophomore Ian Barry was making his first career start on the mound after missing all of 2012 with an injury.  In the third inning, Barry struggled to find the plate and after two wild pitches and a hit batsman, Marietta scored three runs and held a 5-1 lead.

The Pioneers (3-1) would add two more in the fourth, and a three run fifth inning followed by a four-run sixth put the game out of reach.  Denison's second run would be scored by Danny Kraus after a Montes ground out in the bottom of the sixth.

Barry pitched 3.2 innings for DU and took the loss, allowing five earned runs and six hits while striking out one.  Marietta's Stephen Bascom got the win.  He pitched six innings, scattering five hits and one earned run while striking out four.

Charlie Apfelbach accounted for three of Denison's six hits.  He was 3-for-3 from his lead-off position.  Senior catcher Lowell Hall had a double and Tim Duxbury walked twice in four plate appearances.

Marietta's Josh Ungerbuehler was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Jordan Grilliot finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored, one RBI and one walk.

Denison will return to the diamond on Tuesday (March 12) when they play Heidelberg at 9:30 a.m.
