The Denison women's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2013 season following a dominating 9-0 decision over Division II Ashland on Tuesday night at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville.
DU took a commanding 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. In the sweep, two Denison doubles teams picked up their first victories of the year. At No. 1 doubles, senior Alex Marcell and freshman Audrey Fitzpatrick posted a convincing 8-2 win over Kira Kotova and Erika Sullivan. The second doubles team of junior Kelsey Geppner and first-year Taylor Hawkins edged out an 8-6 decision over Martina Baca and Andrea Ruiz. The rookie tandem of Meg Chiumento and Emma Forman picked up their second-straight victory at the third flight following an 8-5 win.
In singles action, the Big Red won five of the six flights via straight sets. Marcell won with scores of 6-0, 6-2 at the first flight, while Geppner (6-1, 6-0) and Hawkins (6-3, 6-2) picked up victories at second and third singles, respectively. Fitzpatrick posted a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win over Ruiz at No. 4 singles, and Forman recorded matching 6-1 scores at the sixth flight.
The lone three-set win came at fifth singles. Chiumento and Daniela Alves split the first two sets with each winning via 6-2 scores. Chiumento preserved the DU shutout with a 10-7 win in the superbreaker.
Denison improves to 1-2, while the Eagles fall to 12-6. The Big Red returns to action on Sunday when they host their second-straight Division II opponent, Indiana University of Pa. Match time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
