After capturing three more event titles on Friday night, the Denison men's swimming & diving team will carry a 46.5-point lead into the final day of the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio.
The Big Red opened the night with a bang, breaking the NCAC Championship meet and school records in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Sean Chabot, Damon Rosenburg, Andrew Rich and Nick Spaniel combined to post an 'A' cut time of 1:28.97.
Denison quickly won its second title of the night when junior Jackson Humphrey took home the 400 I.M. crown. Humphrey's time of 3:57.40 beat out second-place Mark Newell of Kenyon by almost three seconds. Also collecting points in the event were junior Al Weik, sophomore Matt Montague and freshman Nathan Thorne. Weik (4:00.78) and Montague (4:01.81) finished three-four and posted season-best 'B' cuts, while Thorne's time of 4:08.81 landed him in seventh place.
Rosenburg captured DU's third event crown after successfully defending his title in the 100 breaststroke. The sophomore finished the finals in 55.45, but broke the meet record and posted an 'A' cut time in the prelims after clocking in at 55.29. Ben Snader finished sixth after touching in at 57.64. The sophomore had a season-best 'B' cut performance of 57.05 in the prelims.
The Big Red accumulated big points in the 200 free after getting six athletes in the top 14 spots. Junior Carlos Maciel led the pack with a second-place 'A' cut performance of 1:37.94. Trailing the junior were Chabot (3rd), Joe Brunk (4th) and Spencer Fronk (6th). Chabot touched in at 1:38.23, while Brunk and Fronk logged 'B' cut times of 1:40.13 and 1:40.60, respectively.
Senior Quinn Bartlett finished second in the 100 backstroke for the second-straight year after clocking in at 49.67. Chabot (3rd) was right on his heals with a time of 49.85, while Rich posted a 'B' cut time of 51.58 en route to a sixth-place finish.
Rich took second in the 100 butterfly event with an 'A' cut time of 48.96. Also scoring in the event were Dan Hellman (13th) and Ryan Fleming (15th).
DU closed out the night with an 'A' cut performance in the 800 freestyle relay. The group of Chabot, Maciel, Brunk and Weik completed the event in 6:38.56 en route to a second-place finish. The Kenyon foursome, anchored by Ian Richardson, out touched Denison by 26 hundredths of a second.
The Big Red leads the pack with 1,111.5 points, while the rival Lords have 1,065 tallies. Rounding out the top five are DePauw (679.5), Wabash (434.5) and Wooster (377).
Saturday's preliminary events will begin at 10 a.m., with the finals slated to kick off at 6:30 p.m.
