The Denison men got off to an excellent start at the 2013 Miami Invitational. The Big Red posted victories in both events on Thursday night and lead the five-team invitational with 283 points. Second-place belongs to the host, Redhawks, with 164 points while third through fifth place belongs to Cincinnati (132), Wright State (125), and Emory (83).
Denison opened the meet with a victory in the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Sean Chabot, Carlos Maciel, Max Howes and Conrad Wuorinen touched in 6:37.25. Maciel posted the fastest 200 yard split in 1:38.20. That time of 6:37.25 was an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
In the 1650 freestyle, Denison dominated the standings as six swimmers landed in the top-12 in the standings. Senior Al Weik led the way with a first-place finish and a time of 15:22.53. That was good enough for a strong NCAA 'B' cut time.
Also following with NCAA cuts were P.J. Fallon, Connor Downard, and Nathan Thorne. Fallon finished fourth in 16:01.22 while Downard followed in fifth in 16:03.62. Seventh place belonged to Thorne after his time of 16:07.15 while Cam Young (16:26.53), and Rob Lawley (16:26.69) checked in with 11th and 12th place finishes, respectively.
Denison will return to action on Friday with preliminaries at 9 a.m.
