Marietta spoils home opener

Marietta knocked down 13 three-pointers and had five players score in double figure en route to a 91-75 victory over Denison on Saturday afternoon in Granville.

The two squads were in a tight battle over the opening seven minutes of play.  After missing on their first four attempts, the Pioneers finally found its range from beyond the arc when Andy Stegman knocked down a three to give his team a 16-10 lead.  Marietta went on to score eight of the next 10 points to build a 12-point lead midway through the half.

Denison closed the deficit to 35-28 with less than six minutes to play, but a 16-5 run gave the Pioneers an 18-point lead, its largest of the half.  During the run, Marietta went 4-for-6 from three-point range.  Inside the final minute, David Meurer and DJ Bridges scored on back-to-back possession to shrink the half-time deficit to 51-37.

The Big Red trimmed the deficit to 11 three times during the second half.  However, clutch three-pointers allowed the Pioneers to maintain a double-digit lead for the entire 20-minute stanza.

DU shot 50 percent (30-for-60) from the field and 79 percent (11-for-14) from the foul line, while Marietta was 35-of-68 (52 percent) from the floor and 8-for9 (89 percent) from the charity stripe. The difference in the game came from beyond the arc.  Marietta hi 13-of-30 attempts (43 percent), while Denison shot just 25 percent (4-for-16).  The Pioneers had a 36-29 advantage on the glass and got 45 points from their reserves compared to just nine tallies from the Big Red bench.

Brad Woolard led Denison with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-11 from the field, while Meuer and Alex Longi chipped in 14 each.  Patrick Keller added 12 points on 5-of-7 from the floor, while Darius White logged 10 points.  In addition to his 14 tallies, Longi also had a game-high eight rebounds and three assists.

Eddy Grenet and Andy Stegman scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, off the bench for Marietta, while Tyler Hammond had 12 points after going a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range.  Andy Dollman and A.J. Davis also chipped in 11 tallies.  Garrett Stephenson grabbed a team-best seven rebounds, while Davis finished with six boards.

Denison falls to 0-2 on the year, while the Pioneers improve to 4-0.  The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio for a 7 p.m. contest at Case Western Reserve.
