Box Score The Big Red women's soccer team capped off the 2013 regular season with a 2-0 Senior Day victory over DePauw on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville. With their win and a 1-1 draw between Allegheny and Wittenberg, Denison earned a share of its ninth North Coast Athletic Conference Regular Season title.
The pressure applied by the Denison offense proved to be too much for the Tigers to handle as they made two costly mistakes that resulted in both DU goals. The Big Red set the tone early, firing off six shots in the opening 15 minutes of play. In the fifth minute, freshman Anne Denz ripped a shot that grazed off the goalie's hand and the crossbar before falling back into play. Senior Abby Kerbaugh followed up with a header that was smothered by the DePauw netminder.
The Tigers made their first defensive miscue in the 15th minute when an attempted header pass to goalie Emma Cooper hit the left post. After striking the post, the ball bounced in and out of the keeper's hands before striking the pipe for a second time and deflecting into the goal.
Denison doubled its lead in the 25th minute of play off a corner kick by Andrea Witte. The sophomore midfielder sent a cross in from the left side that just cleared the head of Denz who was attempting to flick the ball on net. After missing the intended target, the Witte pass deflected off a DePauw defender's back and into the net. The score gave the Big Red a 2-0 lead heading into the second half.
DePauw picked up the offensive intensity in the second half, outshooting the Big Red 10-6. However, only three of those 10 attempts were on net, and all of them were corralled by Denison keeper Andrea Karl.
Denison outshot the Tigers 17-12, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on target. The Big Red also earned four corner kicks compared to just three by DPU. DePauw committed 14 fouls, including being issued the game's only yellow card, while DU was whistled for 12 infractions.
Jocelyn Festle, Witte and Denz each recorded four shots, while Kerbaugh had two attempts. Stephanie Martin and Alyson Marzonie co-led DePauw with three shot attempts apiece. Karl finished the day with four saves en route to her 30th-career shutout. Cooper and Sarah Cho split time in goal making five and three stops, respectively.
The Big Red improves to 9-7-2 overall and completes the North Coast Athletic Conference schedule with a 5-1-2 record. The Tigers fall to 10-8 on the year and 5-3 in league play. Denison returns to the pitch on Wednesday when they travel to Springfield, Ohio for the semifinals of the 2013 NCAC Tournament. The third-seeded Big Red will take on second-seeded Wittenberg at 7 p.m.
NOTABLE: Prior to the game Denison honored its seven senior members, Emily Carlson, Jocelyn Festle, Claire Hamilton, Lauren Jay, Andrea Karl, Abby Kerbaugh and Libbie Randolph.
