Box Score A goal by Leah Levey in the 88th minute powered the Case Western Reserve Spartans to a 2-1 victory over Denison on Saturday night in Cleveland, Ohio.
Case Western Reserve jumped out to an early lead when Levey threaded a pass to Jessica Sabers streaking down the field. Sabers touched the ball past the charging Andrea Karl and fired a shot into the lower left corner.
The score remained 1-0 until the 61st minute when freshmen Anne Denz and Jessica Skelly teamed up to tie the game at 1-1. Denz got the play going with a cross from the right side of the field. The cross-field pass was punched into the goal by a sliding Skelly. The freshman's fourth goal of the year tied that game at 60:54.
Denison had a couple chances late in the game to take their first lead, but the Spartan defense and goalie Abbey Smith stood strong. The Big Red almost cashed in on a corner kick in the 72nd minute, but the CWRU backline extinguished the scoring chance. Senior Jocelyn Festle also unloaded a shot in the 84th minute, but Smith was there to make the save.
With less than three minutes to play, Alexa Williams threaded a pass to Levey who was running down the left side. Levey touched the ball past the charging keeper and buried a shot into the right corner. The game-winning goal came at 87:19.
Case Western Reserve outshot DU 12-4, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on net. Sophomore Andrea Witte logged two shots, while Festle and Skelly had the other two attempts. Karl finished the game with six saves, while Smith made two stops in 90 minutes.
The Big Red falls to 7-7-1 on the year, while the Spartans improve to 8-7-1. Denison resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Oberlin for a 7 p.m. match.
