Box Score Sophomore Andrea Witte and junior Caitlin Cheverine combined three goals and two assists in Denison's 5-2 victory over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Kenyon on Tuesday in Gambier, Ohio.
The Big Red offense broke the scoreless tie in the 25th minute when sophomore transfer Logan Berlet netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season at 24:11. After having her first attempt stopped by Kenyon goalie Lauren Wolfe, Berlet took a pass from fellow Witte and buried a shot in the back of the net. Of Berlet's six goals this year, three have been aided by a pass from Witte.
Roughly five minutes later, Cheverine logged her first goal of the year off an assist from classmate Maddy Regan. For Regan, it marked her third assist of the season. The score remained 2-0 for the rest of the rest of the half.
In the second half, the Denison offense continued to apply pressure. After logging her team-leading fifth assist in the first half, Witte netted her second and third goals of the year in the 47th and 61st minutes, respectively. The sophomore's first goal of the match came off an assist from Cheverine, while her second was an unassisted tally.
Despite falling in a four-goal hole, the Ladies' offense showed signs of life in the 63rd and 75th minutes when they recorded a goals to cut the deficit in half. Katie Blake broke up the shutout with an unassisted tally, while Marie Laube added the second score off an assist from Maggie Smith. The Big Red stopped Kenyon's momentum in the 87th minute when Grace Danis found freshman Jessica Skelly for her third goal of the season.
The Big Red outshot the Ladies 17-13, including an 11-9 edge in shots on target. Denison dominated the corner battle 10-1, while both teams committed six fouls. Each squad also had a player receive a yellow card in the second half.
Witte paced DU with two goals and an assist on four shots, while Cheverine scored on her lone shot of the game. Berlet and Anne Denz each had three shots. Senior goalie Andrea Karl made a season-high seven saves in 90 minutes in goal.
Blake and Laube each scored on their only shots of the game, while Smith and Becca Romaine logged a game-best five shots apiece. Wolfe finished with five saves on the day.
Denison improves to 6-6-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NCAC, while Kenyon falls to 3-9-1 and 1-3 in the league. The Big Red returns home on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against the College of Wooster.
