Box Score A pair of first-half goals helped Denison knock off Allegheny, 2-1. With the win, the Big Red improved to a perfect 2-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
After two early chances by Allegheny, a Keara Kilbane corner kick set up the Big Red's first goal of the day. The corner was settled by junior Jocelyn Festle and tapped back to sophomore defender Gen Eng-Surowiec. The sophomore created some space and unloaded a shot into the lower left corner for her first-collegiate goal.
Play throughout the opening period remained even until the 31st minute. Following a Gator foul, Eng-Surowiec sent a free kick deep into the box that found the head of Festle. The junior sent her header over the Allegheny keeper and tucked her shot inside the crossbar to give DU a 2-0 lead at 30:54.
The Gators attempted just one shot over the final 15 minutes as they entered the intermission down by two goals. Allegheny pushed the offensive pace in the early stages of the second period, attempting four shots in the first 10+ minutes.
In the 67th minute, the Gators finally broke through to cut the deficit in half. Olivia Cushman sent a corner into the box that was flicked to the right by Hannah Zangara. Zangara's pass was headed into the lower left corner by Jaymee Wallace.
Roughly two minutes after the goal, the visiting team pushed for the equalizer when Katrina Gazsi went heads up with Denison keeper Andrea Karl. Karl got the better of the matchup with a save on the Gazsi shot attempt. The Gators attempted two more shots over the final 11 and a half minute, neither of which were on net.
Allegheny outshot Denison 16-7, while each team attempted five corner kicks. Karl finished the day with two saves, while Kylie Mason made one stop for the Gators.
The Big Red improved to 3-6-1 on the year and 2-0 in the NCAC, while Allegheny fell to 4-6-1 and 0-2 in league action. Denison returns to the pitch on Saturday at the College of Wooster. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
