No. 13 Centre blanks Big Red

Box Score

A pair of first half goals powered 13th-ranked Centre College to a 3-0 victory over Denison on Saturday afternoon in Granville.

The Colonels gained the early advantage with a goal in the 22nd minute of play.  Anne Mitchell scored her second goal of the season off a cross from Morgan Collins.  Centre doubled its lead roughly seven minutes later when, during a scrum in the box, Rachel Brannen fired a shot into the lower left 90.

The Big Red had a solid scoring opportunity four minutes into the second after a Centre foul.  A free kick by junior Libbie Randolph found the head of Jocelyn Festle near the left post.  However, Festle sent a strong header just right of the net.

In the 57th minute, Maddie Slattery's cross found Katie Stevenson in front of the net for the Colonels' third goal of the afternoon.  Stevenson settled the cross and scored in the upper right 90 from close range.

Denison held a 6-5 edge in shots, but trailed 4-2 in shots on goal.  Centre committed eight fouls and attempted five corners compared to just three corners by DU.  Festle paced the Big Red attack with three shots on the day.  Andrea Karl made one save, while Megan Foley and Holly Hilton, who split time in goal, each logged one save for Centre.

DU falls to 2-5-1 on the year, while the Colonels improve to 7-0.  Denison returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Earlham for a 4 p.m. match.
