Box Score Junior Jocelyn Festle's goal in the 68th minute helped the Denison women's soccer team earn a 1-1 tie with 20th-ranked Ohio Northern University on Tuesday evening at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
Down 1-0 midway through the second half, senior captain Leeann Kuehn sent a deep cross from roughly 25 yards out along the right sideline. The senior's cross found Festle who headed the ball past Erin Waehner at 67:30.
The junior's second goal of the season ignited the Denison attack. Following the game-tying goal, the DU offense continued to push play in search of the go-ahead score. The momentum from Festle's goal carried into the first overtime session as the Big Red outshot ONU 4-1. Caitlin Cheverine and Kuehn both fired shots on net, while Andrea Witte, the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, and Joy Dennis both had attempts sail right of the goal.
Ohio Northern turned the offensive tables in the second extra period. The Polar Bears unloaded five shots, none of which required a save by junior keeper Andrea Karl. After 110 minutes of play, ONU held a 16-12 advantage in shots and a slim 5-4 edge in attempts on net.
The Polar Bears took the early lead when Kristina Klusek scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 26th minute. Both Sandra Thorarensen and Sandy Plunkett assisted on the Klusek strike.
Karl finished the nights with four stops, while Waehner logged three saves. Witte, Festle, Cheverine, Abby Kerbaugh and Dennis all posted two shots to pace the Big Red attack. Klusek and Plunkett led the ONU offense with five and three shots, respectively.
Denison moves to 2-4-1 on the year, while Ohio Northern's record moves to 4-0-3. The Big Red returns to the pitch on Saturday when they host 13th-ranked Centre at 1 p.m.
