Box Score Last season in Granville, DePauw University edged Denison 1-0 in its first North Coast Athletic Conference contest. Saturday afternoon, the Big Red gained a measure of revenge with a 1-0 decision over the Tigers in Greencastle, Ind.
The two squads played a scoreless opening half of play. DePauw held a 5-3 edge in shots, but it was Denison that notched the lone shot on goal. Both teams had two corner kick attempts in the first 45 minutes of play.
After playing 79+ scoreless minutes, first-year Andrea Witte broke the scoreless tie at 79:48. Witte chipped a shot over goalkeeper Caroline Kerr, into the back of the net, giving the Big Red a 1-0 lead. The goal was her second in as many games. Witte also punched in the lone goal in Denison's 1-0 victory over Otterbein on Wednesday.
Now playing with the lead, the DU defense, anchored by junior goalkeeper Andrea Karl, needed a strong performance over the final 20 minute to secure the win. The Tigers' Dana Sprague tested Karl with a shot in the 84th minute that was saved. The Big Red nearly made it a two-goal game, but an attempt by Maddy Regan struck the post. DePauw's Paige Fehr sent a shot on net in the 87th minute, but once again Karl was there to make the save.
The Tigers finished the game with a 10-7 advantage in shots, including a 3-2 edge in attempts on goal. Each team logged three corner kicks, while DePauw committed seven fouls compared to just five by DU.
Jocelyn Festle, Regan and Keara Kilbane all logged two shots, while Witte scored on her lone attempt. Angela Cotherman paced the DePauw offense with three shots. Karl picked up her second win of the year after turning aside all three shots on goal. Kerr made one save in the losing effort.
The Big Red improves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC, while DePauw drops to 0-5 on the year and 0-1 in league play. Denison returns to the pitch on Tuesday against Ohio Northern. Kickoff from Barclay-Thomsen Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
