Denison takes series with Tigers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison took three of four games from Wittenberg thanks to a doubleheader split on Saturday in Springfield.  DU dropped game one 4-3, but took the nightcap 6-4.

Following the 3-1 performance this weekend, the Big Red put itself back into contention for a spot in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Denison took the early lead in game two when a single by junior Tim Duxbury drove in senior Evan Nicholson.  Wittenberg answered with a single run in the first and three more in the second inning.

In the fifth, DU engineered a two-out rally to trim the deficit to one.  Senior Justin Vaske got things going with a base hit up the middle.  The senior came around to score on a double by Kyle Colgain.  Junior Danny Kraus followed with a single down the right field line that plated Colgain.  The Big Red led off the sixth with four-straight singles to tie the game at 4-4.  Rookie Ryan Mulligan and Vaske gave Denison a two-run lead with sacrifice fly outs to center that scored Jeremy Tirado and Charlie Apfelbach, respectively.

Junior Philip Seay tossed 5.2 innings out of the bullpen en route to his first victory of the season.  Seay scattered four hits and issued free passes on the day.  Senior McCavitt Carter earned his first-career save after recording three strikeouts in two hitless innings.  Apfelbach, Evan Nicholson, Vaske and Tirado all logged two hits to pace the Denison offense.

In the opener, the Big Red tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh.  Tirdao opened the frame with a base hit to left.  Pinch runner Georgie Montes stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Apfelbach.  Montes came around to score on a one-out single through the left side by Colgain.  However, the Tigers plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning to take game one.

Duxbury went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Colgain and Tirado each drove in a run.  Kraus also logged a triple and scored once.  Senior pitcher Tyler Vaske suffered the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

Denison moves to 8-19-1 overall and 3-5 in NCAC West Division play, while the Tigers sit at 18-11 and 4-8 in conference play.  The Big Red returns to the diamond on Tuesday when they host Ohio Northern University.  First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
