Capital sweeps season series with DU

Capital University completed the season sweep of the Big Red following a 5-2 victory on Thursday evening from Granville, Ohio.

The Crusaders took the early lead when Brian Wyer scored on a single to left by Matt Carnahan in the first.  Denison answered in the bottom of the frame with a run of its own.  Rookie Charlie Apfelbach opened the inning with a base hit through the right side.  After a ground out and an infield single by Ryan Mulligan put runners at the corners, Apfelbach came scored on a misplayed ball by the shortstop.

Capital broke the 1-1 tie with a three spot in the top of the third frame.  Jacob Thuman scored on a wild pitch, while Ryan Pearson singled in Brandon Natale.  The final run crossed on a balk.  Each team plated a run in the ninth frame.  Taylor Branisel scored on a fielder's choice Georgie Montes, while a ground ball to third hit by Kyle Colgain drove in Nick Marsit.

Mulligan and Evan Nicholson each logged two hits, while Nicholson also swiped two bases.  Colgain and Lowell Hall each drove in a run.  Senior Chris Fries suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in the opening three frames.  Danny Kraus pitched four hitless innings in relief with four Ks, while Joro Forman struck out three and walked one in the eighth.  Philip Seay surrendered one run on two hits in the ninth.

The Purple and White sent nine different pitchers to the mound.  Reliever Jeremy Finchum improved to 4-1 on the year after giving up just one hit and striking out one in the second frame.  Anthony Calabrese went 2-for-4 to assist the Capital offense.

Denison falls to 5-14, while the Crusaders improve to 11-7.  DU opens North Coast Athletic Conference West Division play on Saturday with a doubleheader against DePauw University.  Game one is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
