John Carroll tops Denison 3-2

The John Carroll Blue Streaks held on for a 3-2 victory over Denison University on Sunday afternoon in Granville, Ohio.

John Carroll struck first with a tally in opening frame.  After reaching on a one-out walk, Dan Potter came around to score on a base hit to left by Tom Hickey.  The Blue Streaks doubled their lead in the third when Mark Huddle singled in Bobby Sabatino with two outs.

The Big Red cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third.  Senior Evan Nicholson led off the inning with a single to right field.  After stealing second and advancing to third on a ground out, Nicholson crossed the dish on a base hit to left center by junior Danny Kraus.

In the top of the sixth, JCU regained a two-run lead when a costly throwing error with two outs allowed pinch hitter Aaron Miller to score.

Denison made it a one-run contest in the eighth frame.  Senior Justin Vaske was hit by a pitch to open the inning.  With one out, pinch runner Charlie Apfelbach stole second and advanced to a third on a wild pitch by reliever Patrick O'Brien.  After Kyle Clemmenson drew a base-on-balls, Nicholson hit a slow roller to second that scored Apfelbach.

After holding John Carroll scoreless in the ninth, DU was down to its final three outs.  O'Brien retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth en route to his second save of the season.

Nicholson went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base, while Kraus had a base hit and drove in a run.  Clemmenson also extended his current hitting streak to 10 games with a single to left in the fourth.  Junior pitcher Tim Duxbury suffered the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

Mitchell Herringshaw and Tom Hickey each registered three hits to pace the JCU offense.  Jimmy Spagna picked up his second win after giving up just one run on six hits in 6.2 innings of work.

DU falls to 5-12 overall, while the Blue Streaks improve to 6-8.  Denison returns to action on Tuesday at Bluffton.  First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
