Big Red drops twinbill at Mount Union

Denison dropped a pair at the University of Mount Union on Saturday afternoon.  The Purple Raiders won the opener 14-5 and took game two 9-4.

Trailing 3-0 in the opener, the Big Red erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth.  Senior Drew Rice drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly to center field.  Junior Tim Duxbury doubled in Tyler Nicholson and Justin Vaske to tie the game at 3-3.  With two down, a base hit to right by Danny Kraus plated Duxbury and gave Denison its only lead of the afternoon.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Purple Raiders answered with seven runs to regain a commanding 10-4 lead.  DU plated a run in the fifth, but two Mount Union runs in the fifth and sixth secured the victory.

Duxbury went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, while Ryan Mulligan, Kyle Clemmenson and Rice all logged two singles.  Senior reliever Chris Fries suffered the loss after surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.  Starter Kyle Colgain gave up three runs on four hits with two strikeouts in three frames.

In game two, Denison took an early lead with two runs in the first and another in the third.  However, the Purple Raiders tied the contest with two in the fourth and a single run in the fifth.  Mount Union broke the tie in the sixth with six runs.

Mulligan went 2-for-4 in the nightcap with a double and a run scored, while Charlie Apfelbach and Evan Nicholson each had a hit and a run scored.  David Baskin and Clayton Culler both logged a single and an RBI.  Sam Belisle suffered the loss after giving up six runs (three earned) on three hits in a third of an inning.  Senior Dave Holmes went five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits in the no decision.

Denison falls to 5-11 on the season, while Mount Union improves to 12-5.  DU returns to the diamond on Sunday against John Carroll University.  First pitch from Granville is slated for 1 p.m.
