Tied at 4-4, Case Western Reserve's Sean Carr won a three-set decision at second singles to send the No. 23 Spartans past the previously undefeated Big Red on Saturday.
Case Western Reserve took a 2-1 lead following doubles competition. The Big Red's lone point came at the second flight where seniors Tim Martin and Tom Cawood edged Carr and Richard Brunsting, 9-8.
In singles play, Denison went 3-2 en route to tying the match at 4-4. Cawood and freshman Casey Cempre each logged their third-straight victories at the first and fourth flights. Cawood defeated Will Drougas 6-2, 6-4, while Cempre won via 6-3, 6-4 scores. Senior Tyler Cempre picked up the match-tying points thanks to a three-set victory over Eric Klawitter at No. 5 singles. Cempre fell behind after dropping the opening set 7-5. However, the senior rebounded with a pair of 6-2 decisions to secure the point. The win was Cempre's sixth straight and seventh overall
In the decisive flight, senior Matt McErlean jumped ahead with a 6-3 decision. Carr won a tightly contested 7-5 victory over McErlean in the second set. Carr carried that momentum into the third and final set as he completed the comeback with a 6-2 decision.
Denison (7-1) suffers its first loss of the season, while the Spartans improve to 11-6. The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday when they host Wittenberg University. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
