Crusaders outslug Denison

Box Score

Capital University recorded 15 hits and took advantage of six Denison errors en route to a 16-11 decision on Wednesday in Bexley, Ohio.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the third, the Crusaders pushed acroos six runs on four hits and three Big Red errors.  Capital took a commanding 16-5 lead after plating two runs in the fourth and sixth, four tallies in the fifth, and another run in the seventh.  DU answered with three runs in the fifth, and another in the sixth frame.

Denison logged four runs in the eighth inning to shrink the deficit to 16-9.  Tim Duxbury singled in Charlie Apfelbach, while a two-run double to right by Andrew Mahle plated Duxbury and Jeremy Tirado.  Mahle eventually scored on a double play ball hit to the short.  DU added two more in the ninth on a two-run home run to right by Mahle, but Capital's early offense was too much to overcome.

Mahle went 3-for-5 and was a triple away from the cycle.  He drove in five runs and scored two more.  Tirado also logged a pair of hits, while Danny Kraus and Duxbury each scored twice.  Senior Evan Nicholson also knocked in a pair

Connor Murphy took the loss after allowing 13 runs (six earned) on eight hits in 4.1 innings.  McCavitt Carter surrendered two runs and scattered five hits in 1.2 innings, while Joro Forman allowed a run on two hits in one inning.  Kevin Bratcher entered in the eighth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

The Big Red falls to 5-9 on the year, while Capital improves to 10-5.  Denison returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Alliance, Ohio for a doubleheader against Mount Union.  First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
