Through four events the Denison women's swimming & diving team sits in third place at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championship in Indianapolis, Ind. Defending champion Emory leads the field with 180 points and Williams sits in second with 100 points. The Big Red follow in third with 82 points while Kenyon trails in fourth with 75 points.
Denison was led on the opening night by seniors Hilary Callen and Emily Schroeder, who each posted third-place finishes in their respective events.
For Callen, her bronze came in the 500 freestyle thanks to her time of 4:52.17. That marked her second third-place finish in this event in her career. It was also a five-spot improvement over her eighth place finish in 2011. Following Callen in 11th place was junior Alyssa Swanson who posted a time of 4:57.36.
In the next event, Schroeder touched in 2:03.67 to place third in the 200 individual medley. She missed setting the school record by only five one-hundredths of a second. Senior Brenna Broadus scored two points with her 15th place finish and time of 2:06.88.
Twelve more points would come from Morgan Nuess in the 50 freestyle thanks to her time of 23.49 seconds which placed her seventh in the event.
The final event of the night was the 200 medley relay and the team of Victoria Masney, Natalie Lugg, Broadus and Nuess combined for a time of 1:42.90 to place fourth. Nuess led DU with a 22.89 second anchor leg in the freestyle.
The Denison women will compete in the 200 free relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, and the 3-meter dive on Thursday. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. with finals starting at 6 p.m.
