Box Score Denison closed out its spring break trip with a 3-2 victory over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Junior starter Tim Duxbury had another spectacular performance on the hill for the Big Red. Despite allowing a run in each of the first two innings, Duxbury completely shut down the Lions' offense over the next six frames. Justin Shelton singled in Jonathan Roberts from second in the first, while a ground out by Michael Leytze plated Derek Allen in the next inning. After surrendering a base hit by Kyle Vennemeier in the second, the junior hurler retired 11-consecutive batters until a two-out single from Roberts in the fifth.
Duxbury picked up his second win of the year following a two-run, six-hit performance in eight innings of work. He also struck out two, walked one and hit one batter. Since allowing five runs in his five inning debut, the junior has given up just two earned runs in 16 frames, lowering his ERA to 3.00.
The DU offense erased an early 2-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Andrew Mahle reached base after being struck by a 3-2 pitch, while Kyle Clemmenson drew a five-pitch walk. With one down, a single to shallow left center by Evan Nicholson loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, senior Dave Holmes knocked in Mahle and Clemmenson on a singled through the left side. The two-run base knock was Holmes' first hit of the season. Senior Drew Rice followed with a double down the left field line that scored Nicholson.
Senior Joro Forman made his first appearance of the year in the ninth. Forman induced a pair of ground outs and a line out to sophomore short stop Jeremy Tirado en route to his first career save.
Holmes went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Rice logged the only extra-base hit of the game and knocked in another run. Mahle, Clemmenson, Danny Kraus, Nicholson and Tirado all logged a hit.
Vennemeier had two of the six Mount St. Joseph hits, while Leytze, Roberts, Shelton and Garrett Edwards also recorded base knocks. Starter Brandon Polking fell to 1-2 on the season after giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings.
Denison went 4-4 in Port Charlotte and comes back to Ohio with a 5-7 overall mark. DU returns to the field on Tuesday against Heidelberg University. First pitch from Granville is slated for 6 p.m.
