The Big Red women will enter the final day of the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference swimming and diving championship with a 65 point lead on Kenyon College after a strong second night that saw DU post four victories in seven events.
Denison leads the championship with 1,093 points followed by Kenyon with 1,028. Third place belongs to Wooster with 616 points and Wittenberg sits in fourth with 552.
In the 200 freestyle, DU junior Alyssa Swanson won her 13th conference title with a time of 1:51.41. Denison piled up the points in the event by placing five swimmers in the final. Finishing third was Hilary Callen in 1:52.22 while Molly Willingham logged a season-best 'B' cut time of 1:52.94 to finish fifth. In sixth was Tully Bradford thanks to her time of 1:53.77 and seventh went to Marit Wangstad in 1:53.87. In the consolation heat, Janet Watson took 11th in 1:57.33.
Callen would return in the final event of the night, the 800 free relay, with an amazing anchor split of 1:51.28. Over the final 100 yards Callen charged past Kenyon's Kellyn Caldwell for the win. The relay team comprised of Swanson, Emily Schroeder, Willingham and Callen posted a time of 7:29.50.
In the first event of the night, Victoria Masney, Natalie Lugg, Brenna Broadus and Morgan Nuess won the 200 medley relay in 1:43.61. Broadus' 25.25 butterfly split led the way.
Broadus, Masney and Nuess would return in the 100 butterfly where Laurel Brabson paced DU with a second-place finish and a season-best 'B' cut time of 56.16. Masney took fourth in 56.66 and Broadus placed fifth in 56.75. Lauren Wine checked in 11th while Lindsay Zeberlein and Nuess took 12th and 17th, respectively.
In the 400 IM it was Schroeder who chalked up her third career win in the event and her 10th career NCAC title. Her 11th would come later in the 800 free relay. Schroeder's winning time of 4:26.67 edged out teammate Michelle Howell who touched in 4:27.25. Seventh place belonged to Lucy Roth (4:39.82).
Rounding out the night in the 100 breaststroke and the 100 backstroke were five swimmers who placed in the top-eight. Lugg was the runner-up in the 100 breast in 1:04.63 and Broadus placed eighth in 1:07.71. The 100 backstroke saw Masney place fourth, Zeberlein take fifth and Yu finish sixth.
Saturday's preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m. The Big Red will be going for its fourth-straight conference title and their fifth title, overall.
