The Denison women's swimmers sit in fifth place out of nine teams at the 2012 Miami Invitational. DU has totaled 578.5 points through 10 events. The host, Redhawks, lead the field with 1,512.5 points. Cincinnati is in second with 781.5 points while third-place belongs to Emory University (765.5). Western Kentucky is in fourth (634) while sixth through nine are occupied by Wright State, Marshall and Urbana, respectively.
Denison was led on Friday by sophomore Michelle Howell who posted a pair of NCAA automatic qualifying times in the 200 fly and the 400 IM. Howell was second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.57. She was also the runner-up in the 400 IM thanks to her time of 4:21.33.
First-year Claire Van Fossen posted two NCAA provisional times with her 15th place finish and time of 2:08.10 in the 200 fly. She returned in the 100 backstroke, leading DU with an 11th place finish and time of 57.15. Lindsay Zeberlein and Molly Willingham also picked up 'B' cuts in the event.
Alyssa Swanson posted a fifth-place finish in the 200 free with a 'B' cut time of 1:51.28. She also recorded a 17th place showing in the 50 free (24.33).
In the two relays, DU placed sixth in the 200 free and eighth in the 400 medley. Both were provisional qualifying times.
The Denison divers competed at the Calvin Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Kelly Frazier led the Big Red with an eighth-place finish in the 3-meter board. She totaled an 11-dive score of 355.95.
Denison will close out the Miami Invitational tomorrow evening.
