Denison dispatches Lords

Denison sophomore Connor Dignan broke both school six-dive records as the Big Red knocked off North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon, 157-141, on Saturday from the Trumbull Aquatics Center in Granville.

Dignan started off his record-breaking day with a dominating victory in the one-meter event.  The sophomore All-American totaled 352.73 points, besting the previous record by over 22 points (330.30).  Teammate and former record holder Gabe Dixson took second in the event with a score of 348.30.

In the three-meter event, Dignan and Dixson were in a tight battle for school-record bragging rights.  With just one dive remaining, the sophomore edged out the senior by fractions of a point to win the event and establish a new Denison record.

Last week against Wabash, Dignan broke Dixson's previous 3-meter record with a score of 357.53.  On Saturday against the Lords, Dignan finished with 372.53 points, while Dixson posted a score of 371.55.

Five-time national champion Al Weik paced Denison in the pool with two individual titles.  Weik won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:42.26, while the junior All-American and rookie Nathan Thorne went one-two in the 1,000 free with times of 9:46.83 and 9:50.60, respectively.

The Big Red also posted a pair of "B" cut times in the 100 and 200 backstroke events.  Sean Chabot registered a provisional time in the 100 back with a time of 50.75, while senior Quinn Bartlett's time of 1:52.21 in the 200 was also a "B" cut.  In addition, Bartlett took second in the 100 back after touching in at 51.88.

Sophomores Damon Rosenburg and Ben Snader finished first and second in the 100 breaststroke.  Rosenburg clocked in at 59.32, while Snader touched the wall at 1:00.21.  Additionally, Snader captured the 200 breast title with a time of 2:11.51.  DU's final victory came in the 200 medley relay.  The team of Spencer Fronk, Rosenburg, Andrew Rich and Chabot combined to finish the race in 1:33.81.

The Lords strung together three-straight wins to close out the day, but Denison's lead was too much for the visiting team to overcome.  The Big Red returns competition on Nov. 29 at the three-day Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
