DU, Tigers battle to scoreless tie

Denison played North Coast Athletic Conference rival Wittenberg to a scoreless draw after 110 minutes of play on Wednesday at Barclay-Thomsen Field.

The Big Red wasted no time testing Tiger keeper Cassie Lythjohan.  Less than eight minute into the match, senior captain Sara Livingston sent a rainbow shot that forced the Wittenberg keeper to make a leaping save.  Jocelyn Festle quickly got into the action as she attempted the next three shots.  The junior had a pair of shots blocked down by the Wittenberg defense in the 14th and 28th minutes.  Festle also sent a header just left of the net off an Andrea Witte corner kick.

DU held a slight 5-3 edge in shots in the first period with Festle taking four of the five attempts.  In the second half, Tobie Weston gave Big Red keeper Andrea Karl her first test of the game.  The Denison offense answered with three shots in a span of seven minutes.  Festle fired two towards the Tiger net, while classmate Lauren Jay sent a shot over the crossbar.

In the 75th minute, sophomore defender Gen Eng-Surowiec sent a cross deep into the box that was momentarily corralled by Lythjohan.  However, the Tiger keeper loss control of the ball, giving Maddy Regan a shot attempt.  Regan lifted her shot over the crossbar, keeping it a scoreless match.  Each keeper made one more save to force sudden victory play.

After each team recorded just one shot in the first overtime session, the two squads entered the second OT period.  Desperately seeking the elusive game-winning goal, all three shot attempts of the ended up wide left of the goal.

The Tigers finished with a 15-13 advantage in shots, including a 4-3 edge in shots on net.  The Tigers also attempted six corners, all in the second half, compared to just two by DU.  The two teams combined for 17 fouls with the Big Red committing the majority (9-8).

Festle paced the offense with seven shots, while Livingston logged three.  Karl finished the night with four saves in goal.  Weston and Kayla Murphy each logged four shots to lead the Tiger attack, while Lythjohan made three stops.

Denison moves to 3-9-2 and 2-2-1 in the NCAC, while Wittenberg moves to 8-3-3 and 4-0-1 in league play.  The Big Red begins a two-match road trip on Saturday when they travel to Hiram for a 1 p.m. match.
