As the men's 400 freestyle relay concluded on Friday night in
Granville, the curtain dropped for the final time on venerable
Gregory Pool.
Denison's men and women cruised to a dual meet victory over Malone
University, marking the final competition in the history of the
facility. Next fall the Denison swimming & diving program
will move into a brand new, state-of-the-art facility and the
current pool will be remodeled as a fitness center for the
college.
While the Big Red rolled to wins over its opponent from North
Canton, Ohio, the night centered on saying a fond farewell to the
facility that has housed thousands of swimmers and hundreds of
All-Americans.
Prior to the start of the meet Denison senior diver Phil Meyer
performed the honorary "Final Dive" at Gregory Pool. That
dive was judged by former swimming & diving coach and current
senior associate director of athletics, Lynn Schweizer.
Schweizer, who has spent 38 years at Denison as a coach and
administrator, has ties to Gregory Pool that go beyond her first
year at DU in 1974. Raised in Granville, Schweizer, like many area
athletes at the time, competed in high school at Gregory Pool.
Following the Meyer's honorary dive, former head coach and
administrator, Ted Barclay served as the guest starter for the
"Final Start", an exhibition 50-yard freestyle that was swum by
Denison captains, Dan
Thurston, Michael
DeSantis, Robert
Barry, Hilary Callen and Brenna Broadus. Representing the Denison
swimming alumni was 1988 graduate and Denison hall of fame member
Charlie Lownes in lane one.
Results from the meet can be viewed above. Denison's men
defeated the pioneers 123-72 and the women prevailed 102-21.
