The sixth-ranked Denison women's tennis team advanced to the third round of the 2011 NCAA Championship Tournament following a 5-0 victory over Albion College on Friday in Greencastle, Ind.
The Big Red will take on host DePauw University on Saturday (May 14) with a spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals on the line. Earlier in the day, the Tigers defeated Wheaton (Ill.) 5-1.
Denison opened their second-round match in dominating fashion with three convincing wins in doubles competition. Senior Kristin Cobb and junior Sarah Short posted an 8-1 victory over Katie Blumberg and Sarah Towler at the first flight. Sophomore Alex Marcell and first-year Kelsey Geppner also registered an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while Kate Westenberger and Jane Lent won an 8-2 decision at third doubles.
The Big Red wrapped up the victory with wins at fourth and fifth singles. Marcell blanked Marissa Messenger 6-0, 6-0 at the fourth flight, while Westenberger recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.
DU improves to 17-4 on the season, while Britons fall to 15-4. Denison's third-round match against DePauw is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
