Denison completes decade of dominance

The sixth-ranked Denison University women's tennis team continued their string of success at the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament as they captured their 10th-consecutive and 11th overall NCAC Championship trophy.

In the championship match against Kenyon, senior Kristin Cobb and junior Sarah Short knocked off the Ladies' Prita Kidder and Amy Schlessman for the second time this season at No. 1 doubles. The DU duo picked up an 8-6 win over the Kenyon combo.

Kelsey Geppner and Alex Marcell shut out Anna Becker and Lydia Winkler 8-0 at the second flight. Kate Westenberger and Jane Lent completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory at third doubles.

A forfeit at No. 6 singles put the Big Red one win away from capturing the crown.  Marcell secured the match win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Becker.

Against Allegheny, Cobb, who became DU's all-time leader in singles wins on March 29, passed former doubles partner Marta Drane on the school's career list for wins in doubles play. Cobb and Short defeated Sara Long and Lauren Kristofco, 8-2. Gepper and Marcell posted a shutout win at second doubles, while Lent and Westenberger doubled up Deborah Landau and Elyse Schmitt.

Cobb and Marcell got Denison into the championship match with singles wins at the first and fourth flights, respectively. Cobb defeated Carolyn Shetter 6-1, 6-0, while Marcell knocked off Landau 6-1, 6-1.

Denison improves to 16-4 overall and has now won 13 of their last 14 matches, with their only loss coming to third-ranked Chicago.   The Big Red will take a five match winning streak into the 2011 NCAA Division III Championships which are scheduled to begin with regional competition on May 13-15 at a site to be determined.
