Sbrega powers DU past Gators

Box Score

Molly Sbrega scored four goals and added two assists, all in the second half, helping Denison move to 4-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference following a 13-11 win over Allegheny.

It was a close contest for the entire 60 minutes and Denison's strong second half would be the difference.  Trailing 7-6 heading into the final 30 minutes of play, the Gators got on the board first, moving their advantage to 8-6 but that's when the floodgates opened for Denison.

At the 28:21 mark Phoebe Myhrum found Sbrega for her first goal of the game, and just over a minute later, Sbrega hit Jenny Strathern to tie the game at 8-8.

Denison would take their first lead of the second half at the 20 minute mark when Lulu Carter scored via an unassisted goal.  Sbrega and Strathern would go back-to-back on goals, giving Denison an 11-8 lead while pushing their run to five unanswered goals.

Allegheny would bounce back with two goals from Jensen Paterson, trimming the DU lead to one at 11-10 with six minutes left.

After two minutes of play DU would put the game away thanks to a pair of free position goals by Sbrega.  Sbrega's six points were a season high for a half.  Olivia Shiland followed with three goals and one assist while Strathern also netted four points, with two goals and two assists.

Laura Campbell started for DU in goal and allowed seven goals while posting four saves.  In the second half, Grace Bodenmann chipped in two saves while allowing four goals.

Paterson paced Allegheny with five goals.  As a team, DU outshot Allegheny 28-22.  The Gators took 14 of 26 draws and each team totaled 13 ground balls in the contest.

The Big Red move to 7-4 overall and 4-0 in the NCAC with the win while the Gators drop to 8-5 and 1-2 in conference play.  DU will return to the field on Tuesday when they host Kenyon College at 7 p.m.  Live Video will be provided free of charge by the Denison Sports Network.
