The Denison University men's tennis team dropped their final two matches at the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) Tournament on Saturday in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Big Red suffered setbacks to DePauw (5-3) and Case Western Reserve (5-4).
Against the Tigers, the No. 1 doubles team of Matt McErlean and Tyler Cempre edged Noah Swiler and Sam Miles, 8-6. The tandem of Jared Connolly and Tim Martin gave DU a 2-1 edge at the conclusion of doubles competition with an 8-6 victory at the second flight. The other Denison win came at second singles where rookie Juan Guerra won a three-set match against Miles (1-6, 6-3, 6-3).
Against the Spartans, McErlean and Cempre turned in a dominating performance against fourth-ranked Nicolas Howe and John Healey. The Big Red duo posted an 8-1 decision at first doubles. In single action, Guerra pulled out another three-set winner at second singles (1-6, 6-2, 6-0), while Evan Verbofsky and Tom Cawood won in straight sets at the third and fourth flights, respectively.
Denison (7-6) returns to the court on Wednesday (April 13) when they travel to Kenyon College. Match time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
